An overcast afternoon, a sodden pitch and four teams of eager boys with mascots in tow set a familiar scene for another Grange House Football Tournament.
The four teams of Drake, Grenville, Nelson and Raleigh took to the field for the opening matches with parent-commentators, as always, assessing the action from the sidelines and cheering on their teams. After the fiercely competed first games, the tone was set for the remaining matches in the group stage, with Nelson finally emerging on top after two impressive victories from their three games. Grenville just edged out Drake for a second place finish, resulting in their entry in to the final and Drake and Raleigh challenging each other for third and fourth place.
As the tension grew, as much with the parents as with the boys, we were treated to two more excellent matches, firstly with Raleigh overcoming the determination of Drake to confirm a third place finish and then with the final. The commitment of the Grenville players managed to keep the flair of those in Nelson at bay with some last ditch defending until the final whistle. A penalty shoot-out was all that stood between defeat and victory. The enjoyment had by all involved, be they player or spectator was not to be surpassed, particularly for Nelson, who gained a thoroughly deserved victory after penalties in the final.
A big thank you must be given to all who helped out and supported the event and many congratulations to all of the boys of Prep I and II at The Grange for their performances.
