Prep I (Year 3)
Michaelmas Term - Investigating our Local Area: A look at Monmouth’s key geographical features and major landmarks. This includes a walk around the town and up The Kymin. Introduction to mapping: Concept of birds’ eye view and use of symbols.
Lent Term - Weather around the World: Discussing how weather affects activities and lifestyle, climactic zones around the world, forecasting. This includes an activity measuring our weather and plotting results.
Summer Term - How and where we spend our leisure time: Investigating what and where people go for leisure activities. Using local maps. This includes designing and carrying out a survey.
Prep II (Year 4)
Michaelmas Term - Farming: A look at different types of farms, farming practices, geographical factors affecting farming.
Lent Term - Learning about less economically developed villages around the world: Comparing villages in India, Jamaica and Kenya.
Summer Term - Settlements: Look at how settlements develop and grow. This includes a challenge to design their own settlement using craft materials and I.C.T. mapping.
Prep III (Year 5)
Michaelmas Term - Resources (with a focus on water): Studying the importance of resources, recycling and conservation. This includes a survey, water cleaning experiment and field trip to Cilfyndd Water Treatment Plant.
Lent Term - Rivers: Study of river processes and key features: This includes an independent research project on a river.
Summer Term - Environmental implications of building a new school: A study of the needs and consequences of building a new Grange. This includes designing their own school.
Prep IV (Year 6)
Michaelmas Term - Comparing the UK with a contrasting country: Researching the differences in topography, climate, health, education, religion, customs & food. This includes a day of celebration of a country of their choice.
Lent Term - Mountains: Study of mountain processes and key features: This includes giving a PowerPoint presentation on mountain safety.
Summer Term - Orienteering and map reading: Learning how to use a compass and map to find control points. This includes end of term task with ‘real’ bounty.
