The annual Grange Soccer Tournament, now into its fifteenth year, took place on Friday11th March. A dry day greeted the 16 teams who were split into four pools. After the pool stages the top two sides in each pool progressed to the Cup and the bottom two contested the Plate. The standard in the cup competition was as high as ever, with any number teams looking capable of winning. Overmonnow beat Osbaston to set up a semi final with nine time winners Pentrepoeth. After an excellent end to game Pentrepopeth secured their passage into yet another final. In the other half of the draw The Grange defeated last years’ winners Bream in their semi final. The final started at a furious pace. After a frantic ten minute game the deadlock could not be broken. The scores remained level even after extra time and so sudden death penalties would be needed top split the teams. Angus McIntyre coolly slotted The Grange into the lead and when Pentrepoeth’ s penalty clipped the post and agonisingly went wide, victory was secured for The Grange. In the plate final B teams of Osbaston and The Grange fought out an entertaining game with The Grange just shading proceedings. Overall a fantastic afternoon of football, watched by a large and appreciative crowd.
