Having studied Kenneth Grahame’s ‘The Wind in the Willows’, Prep II wrote a new chapter for the book in the style of the author. Here are some for you to enjoy.
One hot summer day, Ratty and Mole were sitting on the river bank composing songs and fishing. The rat felt a spot of rain on his paw. “Oh dear!” said the rat, “We shall have to go in to the parlour.” So the two animals went inside and sat down. Suddenly they heard a screech of brakes and a loud crash followed by a big splashing noise.
“Oh Blow! What was that?” said Mole. They went outside; it had started to rain very heavily.
Meanwhile, Toad had been driving very fast in his motor car. He had skidded on the wet surface and crashed into a tree. The tree had fallen into the river causing a dam.
Ratty and Mole were unable to see the tree because of the heavy rain and mist on the river. They went back inside out of the rain, but the house was filling up with water. The two friends climbed up onto the table and floated out of the window and into the river.
When they reached the bank they ran to Badger’s house and all three returned to the riverbank. They could see Toad’s car and the tree trunk in the river. “Toad is a silly ass,” said Badger.
They went to Toad Hall and made Toad put a bridle on the horse and take him to the river. They tied a rope to the tree and urged the horse to pull it out.
“Well done, old chap!” they cried, “Jolly good show!”
Toad was very sorry. When they returned to Ratty’s house the water was subsiding. The friends worked hard and ladled out the residue of river water.
Mole lit a fire and the four friends shared a pleasant repast.
“Help!” shouted Ratty, “my house is flooding!” Mole quickly ran in. “Wow!” Mole said, struggling for air.
In the pouring rain Ratty and Mole ran with their wet coats on; they soldiered on. Soon they got stuck in the squelchy mud. “Oh no! My clothes are ruined!”
“Come on old chap keep your spirits up,” said Ratty, pulling Mole out of the mud. “We are past the muddy bit now, we will be there in a flash, come on.” Finally they were at Toad Hall. Ratty and Mole burst through the door.
“Toad, my house is flooding!” shouted Ratty. Toad was asleep living the life of luxury. Soon the whole town knew about Ratty’s house.
“What are we going to do?” asked Toad. “Let’s make an announcement.” Soon the whole town was sitting down at Toad Hall. Ratty stood on a podium and said hopefully,
“Everyone, please help build a new house for me.” The whole town agreed to help Ratty. Ratty said to Mole, “Where are we going to build my house?”
“We could build it by me!”
“Good idea.”
For the time being they stayed in Mole’s house. Ratty went to get vine from the wood, Mole went to get strong oak from the forest, Toad went to get money and Otter’s family went round every house collecting unused household bits. So they gathered up the household bits and put them together with Ratty shouting out the orders. It took a long time to persuade Toad to give Ratty money for his house. Soon the house was built it looked really good. Often Mole came to Ratty’s beautiful house. Toad was really jealous. But still Toad, Ratty and Mole friendship was never broken.
Smash, bash, crash! The storm was getting bigger and louder; Mole and Ratty were shivering with fear in bed .That night, Mole had a dream, he was floating on water. Suddenly he woke up; then he noticed he was floating on water. Ratty’s house had been flooded. “Ratty wake up,” said the mole. ”What is it old chap?” asked Ratty.
” Your house has been flooded!”
“Oh no, it must have been the storm,” said Ratty.
Mole and Ratty were worried; where were they going to stay? “We will have to speak to Badger and ask him if we can stay with him till the flood goes down,”
said Ratty.
“Good idea,” replied Mole.
That afternoon Mole and Ratty were strolling along looking for Badger; finally they found Badger’s house. “Come on then let’s go and knock on the door,” said Ratty. ‘Bang, Bang!’ went Badger’s door as Ratty was knocking on it. “Coming,” called a voice from nowhere. Suddenly Badger’s door opened and someone came out; it was Badger.
“Hello Ratty, hello Mole,” said Badger.”
“Hello Badger, are we allowed to stay at your house for the night because
our house has been flooded,” asked Ratty.
”Of course you can stay here for the night old chap,” said Badger.”Come in, come in, luncheon is almost ready.”
That evening, Mole, Ratty and Badger were getting ready for bed. When
they were all in bed Mole said good night and they went to sleep. In the morning Mole and Ratty were getting ready to go.
“The flood should have gone down now, old chap,” said Ratty.”
“Take care,” said Badger.”
“We will,” replied the rat.
