Science Club goes bananas!

January 29, 2016

Science clubipThis week the Grange Science Club had a go at molecular biology and isolated the molecule which is the blueprint of every living organism by extracting DNA from bananas. To do this they mostly used everyday household substances and equipment including salt, washing up liquid and a coffee filter after enthusiastically mashing their banana to a pulp using a fork to help break open the cells. The look on the boys’ faces as the DNA precipitated out of the banana extract they’d made was magical.
