Trampolining champ to represent The Grange

January 22, 2016

Lawrence Johnson3A sporty boy who loves nothing more than flying through the air is set to represent his school at a regional trampolining competition this weekend.

Lawrence, who attends The Grange Monmouth Preparatory School, will be bouncing and somersaulting at the Central Zone Trampolining contest tomorrow after winning in the U11 boys’ category in the Welsh round last month.

He will be up against children from Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia.

Lawrence, nine, has been trampolining for one year.

He said: “I like trampolining because it’s not like other sports where you’re in a team – it’s just you, and if you make a mistake then you’re out.

“In the Welsh round of the competition, I had to perform two routines and I got the most marks.

“I was a bit nervous performing the second routine because I knew I was close to winning.

“I was over the moon to win, it meant a lot.

“I put in lots of practice – about three or four hours a week.

“My goal would be to win the nationals.

“I’ll be doing a much harder routine and I’ll be training a bit more for the Central Zone round.”

Lawrence trains with his sister, seven-year-old Petra, who attends Inglefield House.

Petra’s team came second in their category at the Welsh competition.

“Petra started trampolining about half a year ago, and it really helped me to make more friends,” Lawrence added.

“I enjoy flying through the air.

“The Grange announced my win in assembly, it was really exciting.

“Going to the Olympics one day is a goal.

“I also play rugby, which is quite different.”

Lawrence’s mum Kylie said the siblings get a lot of fun out of the sport, as well as a real sense of achievement when they train and improve.

She added: “Lawrence and Petra gain confidence and the ability to control their nerves when competing.

“It is lovely for them to do a sport together and wonderful to see them having fun.

“The Grange is very supportive of all extracurricular sports the boys compete in.  They have made Lawrence feel really proud to compete on behalf of The Grange and bring back a trophy.”

Good luck Lawrence!
